The Ironclad is the engine the rest of the collection is drawn around. The boiler is turned from a single billet of black walnut, banded in hard maple, and capped with a spun brass stack ring and bell that are polished, not plated.

The drive wheels are turned true on a lathe and run on steel axles seated in bronze bushings, so it rolls straight across a hardwood floor without wandering. The cab windows are cut through, not routed in — a child can see daylight through the engine.

It is a substantial object. At just under two pounds it has the heft of a tool rather than a toy, which is exactly what makes a four-year-old carry it around the house for a decade.
